Is there a way to change the font in a TEXT or COMMENT element? For example, the first character I would like to use a symbol font and then switch back to a text font.

Sorry to hear about the damage from the typhoon. I hope it all works out ok.

Not exactly. I've often thought about it but couldn't devise a nice way to do it.

However, you can achieve something like what you want with a little judicious use of absolute positioning.

COMMENT=x:20,y:3,font-face:Courier New,font-size:14,text:Desktop Info
COMMENT=x:160,y:0,font-face:Comic Sans MS,font-size:13,text:by Glenn Delahoy
COMMENT=x:310,y:2,font-face:Arial,font-size:14,text:♥|

The pipe at the end is a line feed to force the Y position down to the next line to continue normal output.

Yep, almost exactly like that. Unfortunately, absolute positioning won't work for me, as the entire DTI window is dynamically spaced.

I want to include icons next to the section headings.

so i've added something akin to rich text formatting so you can switch fonts, sizes, colours, styles etc in the item display output. the image i posted earlier shows that in operation, that top row is a single COMMENT item. the icon comes from wingdings (or webdings, i forget).
