I have downloaded Desktop Info 2.61.

It seems to be displaying a lot less information that what I would expect.

For example I run the DesktopInfo-Technician.bat file and I get a Title line. a Date/Time line, a Battery Line, then a Cyan border coloured empty box then 2 orange border empty boxes. Running the program with the desktopinfo-sample.ini I get five lines of data, date/Time, Host Name, User, CPU Type & Display Controller, using the Advanced ini file I get the same.

The system is running Windows 10 home Version 1903 Build 18362.900

The computer is an Acer Aspire E15 Notebook Model E5-575G-5230 i5-7200, 16GB Memory, Nvidia 940MX, 1TB disk.

      Some further information:

      1. The time is not being updated
      2. 20 minutes after starting, five more lines were added: CPU, Top Process CPU, Top Process Mem, Top Process PF & Physical Ram

Data does not seem to be getting updated.

The system is close to being idle.

Another 20 minutes and we have some more lines added now down to net packets/sec and also we get a new time.

I suggest you start with the simple ini file and begin removing items (or comment them out) until it functions correctly. This will highlight the item causing the problem.

I’m trying it in interactive mode.

I’m using the simple sample ini file as a starting point

So far I have found that having diskio enabled causes the problem, and does not return any I/O information. disable this and the remaining data displays

The WMI CPU temp does not display anything

Enabling the line for CPU line chart results in a while box and nothing loading after it. I generally have to kill the task.

Pagefaults does not load and anything after it does not load.

WMI options under network just result in the orange boxes and nothing after it loaded.

After getting a basic display of the disks I left that enabled while trying the other options. when any failed the disk options did not load. Most of the time I had to kill the process.

Everything you just described points to WMI issues on the machine. It may be WMI corruption or permissions, etc. Check the desktopinfo.log file for errors.

Neither ERROR nor WARN sees see a log file created. INFO level does but its 4 lines say nothing of interest.

      Try the DEBUG setting.

I took the simple sample ini file and set the level to debug. The program has been running for some hours now, I’ve removed a lot of the duplication (DEBUG UpdateEntries Complete).

      This is what remains:

Well, you’ve edited the output so it’s hard to follow but it would suggest that:

cpu temp took 23 minutes to run
page faults took 23 minutes to run
network took 20 minutes to run

There’s a problem with wmi on your machine. What that might be is something you’ll have to explore. I did a quick search on what might cause wmi queries to take so long without any real answers which tells me it’s not a general problem.

You might want to try a few test tools such as WmiExplorer, WBemTest, PerfMon.

The deleted entries all contain “DEBUG UpdateEntries Complete”

I ran Perfmon without any problems expected data is getting returned. I also downloaded and ran some VBS scripts again no problems. I concentrated on disk i/o data.

I currently have the tool running without any disk i/o or network i/o data, curious some of it did work before Microsoft pushed some updates, so I’m suspicious of the updates.

Looks like this one gets filed in the no idea what is going on pile.

I suppose you could uninstall recent updates to see if that changes anything.
