We had a major storm through here recently and we suffered damage to the house roof and ceilings. I just received the quote to repair. I’m hoping that a small fraction of the 80,000 odd people that download SDIO and/or Desktop Info every month won’t mind chipping in a few dollars to help out. Hi,
i love this tool, but its something rotten inside when i try it on some retro machines with Windows Xp or 7. These machine has not really working browsers now, so this tool is very handy.
Maybe its about MMX,SSE,3Dnow instructions compilations or something like that.. On half of the machine from Pentium 200 range to Pentium IV 32 bit, its not starting at all in 32 bit.
On the most of others even gui when it starts to download anything at all is very slow and its everytime, there has to be some very heavy processing in background or simple used GUI and its refreshing is very badly optimized.
Last think of course its downloading, for example on Pentium IV with the fast connection it is downloading like 300 KB/s, simple file downloading should be so heavy. These machines where able to run - uTorrent or Direct Connect Strong quite fine.
Its not memory issue i have usually ram maxed on these machine and they have SSDs, or some quite fast PATA / Sata Hdds.
If its SSL libs version etc problem. there are openSSL files comiled for the old systems..
The last thing which i dont under is if installation failed because of impossibility to create restore point, it seems that downloading or some download chace check is restarted and you have to wait again very old time to redownload or reverify of downloaded data.. It not second, its not minutes its tens of minutes or hours.
Any reply or hints, or workarounds?
I don't see any of the things you are describing but without anything firm I can't test. Please give details on the environment in which you are experiencing issues.
To simulate it, just try to run it on any old Hardware from Pentium 1 to Pentium 4 (for AMD/Cyrix anything from K5 75 MHz too Athlon 64), and you will get the same issues, i get it on like 15 different machines, mostly with Windows XP, but also with Windows 7 or Vista (Server 2008).
Maybe some missing instruction sets are the issues.
Issues:
- Slow GUI
- very slow start
- slow downloads
- restart all downloads after install fail because of disable not available Restore points
You can simulate old HW through 86Box (PCem) or Qemu on Windows - there is machine types and switches to enable MMX, 3DNow, SSE2,SSE3, SSE4. I have tried to install all Visual Basic and VIsual C++ redist.. packages but it seem not have effect.. You maybe can add some check at the start. It could be some openSSL etc library issues too, im not sure how heavy they are on SSEX instructions.
Its not videocard thing, because its behave similar with Microsoft generic drivers and drivers installed.
Problem is that these machine struggle with any new internet browsers too - rootcause is that they really on SSEX instructions.
SOrry for late reply, im subscribed to get email notification, but got none, i have checked spam folder too - there is nothing from this website, or about snappy or from your nickname.
I don't have any hardware that old but I can spin up a VM emulating older hardware. I'll look into that next week.To simulate it, just try to run it on any old Hardware from Pentium 1 to Pentium 4 (for AMD/Cyrix anything from K5 75 MHz too Athlon 64), and you will get the same issues, i get it on like 15 different machines, mostly with Windows XP, but also with Windows 7 or Vista (Server 2008).
