One day recently my four year daughter asked me how many sleeps until Santa comes. It took me a while to figure it out but I finally came up with an answer. A few minutes later she came back and asked me if I could write something to put on her computer that would tell her every day how many sleeps until Santa comes. Well, I delivered on time and on budget and, like most of my customers, she wanted changes, enhancements etc. So in addition to the little program that shows a cute little countdown on the desktop, there's also a colourful and easy to use setup program to change the big day, message text, fonts and colours and desktop position. It was written with Santa in mind but you can use it to countdown to any big day. NOTE: Works on Windows 2000/XP only. How To Use Sleeps ----------------- There are two applications in the package: sleeps.exe shows your message on your desktop and setup.exe is the configuration program. Run the setup program to change the settings. I've tried to make it as simple and intuitive as possible. My tester is my four year daughter. She likes to play with the settings and colours and stuff. The Big Date: This is the date to which you're counting down. By default it's Christmas. Click the down arrow to drop down the calendar. Display Text: You can set three lines of text. Type in anything you like. The magic word, {sleeps}, (note the curly brackets) is the placeholder for the number that Sleeps inserts into the text when it is displayed on the desktop. Text Colour: Choose the font colour from the drop down list. Desktop Location: Use these sliders to move your message around on the desktop. It does calculations to take into account multi-display configurations and also to prevent the message from disappearing off the screen. It doesn't take into account the Windows taskbar. If your taskbar is always on, the Sleeps message may be partially hidden if you locate the message close to it. Run Sleeps: This runs the main Sleeps application and shows your message on the desktop or, if it is already running, it will stop it. While Sleeps is running, it will respond immediately to any changes you make in the Setup program. Startup: This adds Sleeps to your Windows startup folder so that Sleeps automatically runs every time you log on to Windows. If Sleeps is already in the startup folder this will remove it. Font: Change the message font and size. When you click the Apply button, Sleeps updates immediately so it's simple and fun to experiment with different fonts. Known Issues ------------ Very occasionally, Sleeps doesn't immediately update while you're playing in the setup program. This is nothing to worry about, the next change you make, Sleeps will catch up. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Release Notes ------------- Version 1.01 ------------ Change 1: Fixed rounding bug.
